Late night dining in Brussels / Dîner tardif à Bruxelles

I think I already mentioned before that most restaurants in Brussels close really “early”, at least for “Parisian Software Developer” standards. I mean, when MacDonald’s already put out the trash at 10PM, it’s pretty bad…

Je crois que j’ai déjà dit que la plupart des restaurants de Bruxelles ferment vraiment “tôt”, du moins pour un “ingénieur informaticien parisien”. J’veux dire, quand le MacDo a déjà sorti les poubelles à 22h, ça craint…

And, of course, when I’m sent on a business trip to a customer site, it usually means there will be long hours. First priority is to get things done, and only then can we get back to the hotel and rest.

Et bien sûr, quand on m’envoie pour affaire chez un client, ça veut en général dire qu’il y aura de longues journées. La priorité c’est de faire en sorte que tout fonctionne, et seulement après on peut rentrer à l’hôtel pour se reposer.

Well, I’m always optimistic. Those working hours are a good opportunity to practice night photography, especially without a tripod. Because of course, I’m not going to carry around my big tripod in my carry-on luggage. And, of course, it doesn’t always work. One evening, staying late (also because I was waiting for some other people so that we can share a cab, the tram having stopped working already), I managed a shot that people would call “a sneeze”, as in “I sneezed when I pressed the shutter”. Pretty, no?

Bon, je suis toujours optimiste, moi. Ces horaires de boulot sont une bonne opportunité pour m’entraîner à la photo de nuit, surtout sans trépied. Parce que bon, j’allais clairement pas me coltiner un gros trépied dans mon bagage cabine. Et bien sûr, ça ne fonctionne pas toujours. Un soir, resté tard (aussi parce que j’attendais des collègues pour partager un taxi, le tram ayant déjà arrêté de circuler), j’ai réussi une prise qu’on pourrait appeler “un atchoum”, comme dans “j’ai éternué en appuyant sur le bouton”. Joli, non?

But most of the time, Brussels is so bright, at night, that many pictures can be taken without a flash, as if it was broad daylight…

Mais la plupart du temps, Bruxelles est tellement éclairée, la nuit, que nombre de photos n’ont même pas besoin de flash, comme en plein jour…

Anyways, not far from my usual hotel…

There’s a Turkish restaurant called the Kervansaray. They’re open late enough that people started to nickname it the “Company’s Brussels HQ”, considering some people ate there every night.

Il y a un restaurant Turc qui s’appelle le Kervansaray. Ils sont ouverts assez tard pour que mes collègues le surnomme “le siège bruxellois de la boîte”, vu que certains y mangeaient toutes les nuits.

The owner is sometimes a bit strange, but is an overall sympathetic guy. The grilled meats and skewers are really good, the dishes are pretty cheap, and you can even see the guy cooking :).

Le patron est parfois un peu bizarre, mais plutôt sympa dans l’ensemble. Les grillades et brochettes valent le détour, les plats sont bons marché, et on peut même voir le cuistot à l’œuvre :).

I discovered some typical liquor there, called Rakı (kinda reminded me of Pastis…)

J’ai dévouvert un genre de gnôle locale, le Rakı (qui m’a rappelé le Pastis, un peu…)

Oh, and a small piece of advice when you order drinks: check the prices carefully. We noticed that order two small beers was sometimes cheaper than ordering one big one, for the same total volume… Go figure.

Oh, et petit conseil quand vous commandez vos boissons: faites bien vos calculs. On a remarqué que 2 petites bières pouvaient parfois revenir moins cher qu’une grande, pour le même volume total… Va comprendre.
